AIA Starter Plans

The three new AIA Starter Plans are digital only and non-advice, distributed via AIA's website and digital distribution partners.

These plans are customer-insight led, and designed to attract the middle-market with tailored, basic low sum assured life, rent or mortgage protection, and with an optional add-on of Specialist and Diagnostic Testing for medical conditions.

Each plan also includes AIA Vitality Starter, a new entry level version of our AIA Vitality programme which is embedded and sold exclusively with AIA Starter Plans. AIA Vitality Starter is designed to help them on their journey to better health and get rewarded for doing so. This version of the programme includes rewards such as weekly Active Rewards, the Apple Watch Benefit and a Les Mills gym membership discount.

In New Zealand there is a growing protection and wellbeing gap, resulting in a shrinking number of new customers over the last few years. In particular, the middle-market segment, who traditionally would not seek advice for life and health insurance. There's an opportunity to help close this gap by offering a new digital non-advice solution to start them on their insurance and wellbeing journey; and for them to become long-term, sustainable customers.

Through research we have identified two groups of the middle-market who currently have limited or no existing cover and seek basic, affordable and rewarding insurance. They range in age between 20-55 years. These include:

  1. Young learners - who are younger professionals and tradies starting out or early in their careers. To attract them to buy insurance, we know they need to be inspired and rewarded instantly, and know they are making good financial decisions.

  2. Young and school age families - affordability and perceived value for this group is critical as the costs of living are rising. Their decisions around discretionary spend are an important consideration for them. We know this group of customers need a straightforward approach that is clear on its value, as they need to know their decision to buy cover will help provide a better life for them and their families.

Protecting and growing our full advice channel partners

The Starter Plans have been designed to be differentiated as entry level versions to AIA Living, AIA Health and AIA Vitality to help start middle-market customers on their insurance journey. These plans will complement our existing advice channel by:

  • Only being available to new customers;

  • Non-eligible and non-suitable customers will be provided as referral opportunities to our advice partners;

  • Data-driven customer lifecycle communications designed to identify when a customer has a change in circumstances requiring an advice conversation;

  • Bundled pricing is similar to AIA Living;

  • Simple replacement rules when upgraded to AIA Living - with no underwriting on like-for-like replacement.

AIA Starter Plan journey

For our Starter Plan customers, AIA will demonstrate at each plan anniversary the benefits of advice and comprehensive insurance. This will continue until the customer identifies their need for advice, at which time they can request a call back.

The three new plans - AIA Healthy Starter, AIA Starter Life and AIA Starter Life Plus - are designed for New Zealanders who are looking for basic, affordable and rewarding insurance, offered via a seamless digital solution.
